A 33-year-old naval veteran gave new life to five individuals by donating his organs at the Southern Command Hospital in Pune. After being declared brain dead due to brain stem failure, his family was counselled according to the established protocol regarding the possibility of organ donation.
Upon receiving their consent, the transplant coordinator immediately initiated the necessary procedures. The veteran’s liver was transported to the Army Hospital (R&R), while his heart was sent to a hospital in Mumbai.
Both kidneys were simultaneously transplanted into a 31-year-old veteran and an 18-year-old renal failure patient at the same hospital. The corneas were donated to the eye bank at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).
These tasks were successfully carried out by highly trained professionals from the Command Hospital, including the transplant coordinator, ICU staff, and a team of multispeciality doctors and nurses, under the guidance of Major General B Nambiar, Commandant of the Command Hospital.
The military and state police also played a key role in facilitating the organ donation by providing a green corridor from the airport to the hospital on short notice.
"A big salute to the generosity and benevolence of the family who consented to this noble act without hesitation," said the PRO (Defence) in a press release.
