As Punekars refuse to wear helmets, the administration has decided to enforce a helmet ban in the city by checking and fining two-wheeler riders coming to government offices.
As per the order by Pune Divisional Commissioner, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will now scan people coming to government offices and issue chalans to them. The increasing number of fatalities among two-wheeler riders in road accidents in Pune has prompted calls for mandatory helmet use. This led to a recently held meeting at Pune Vidhan Bhawan, under the guidance of Supreme Court Justice Abhay Sapre, where he urged authorities to enforce strict adherence to helmet laws.
As per section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and directions issued by various high courts and the Supreme Court, it is mandatory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders to wear helmets.
