Thane: Container truck carrying 23,000 litres of hydrogen peroxide overturns near Ghodbunder road

A container truck loaded with chemicals overturned on busy Ghodbunder road near Thane in the wee hours of Tuesday, resulting in a huge traffic jam, said an official from the regional disaster management cell (RDMC).

Avinash Sawant, RDMC chief, Thane said, "Our team received a call at around 7:15 am about the container truck carrying 23,000 litres of hydrogen peroxide in 20 tanks going from Gujarat to Nhava Sheva that overturned near the Gaimukh creek on busy Ghodbunder road in Thane. The driver of the container Amrish Kumar (23) lost control of the vehicle. The chemical-hydrogen peroxide leaked on the road emitting a foul odour."

Sawant further added, "Soon after receiving the information, we reached the spot along with two pick-up vehicles, one fire vehicle, one crane machine and one rescue vehicle. Fire brigade personnel and Kasarwadvali police personnel supported us in the operation and they were present at the spot. After three hours of effort, the container was moved to the side of the road with the help of two cranes. There was huge traffic congestion for three to four hours but now the road has been cleared for all the vehicular traffic."

"The driver of the container, Amrish Kumar, sustained minor injuries on his left leg and chest and was admitted to Vedanta Hospital at Ghodbunder Road in Thane for treatment. Fortunately, no major casualties occurred at the time of the incident and there were also no reports of anyone being affected due to the chemical leak," informed Sawant.
