Mumbai: WR Celebrates Centennial Of Railway Electrification Of Indian Railways With Exhibition And Seminar

Mumbai: To mark the historic occasion of Indian Railways completing 100 Years of Railway Electrification, Western Railway organized an exhibition and seminar as part of the celebrations. On 3rd February 1925, India witnessed a momentous event—the debut of its first electric train on the current Indian Railways network.

This inaugural journey, connecting Victoria Terminus to Kurla Harbour, marked a defining milestone, offering a glimpse into the limitless future of our nation’s lifeline.

According to Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, to commemorate this momentous event, on 18th February, 2025, General Manager of Western Railway, Ashok Kumar Misra along with esteemed guests Sukhbir Singh, retired Member Electrical/Railway Board, H.B. Singh, retired Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of Eastern Railway and Ranjan Srivastava, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Western Railway inaugurated a two-day exhibition at Churchgate Station.

The inaugural event was attended by officers from various railway units, retired senior railway electrical officers and representatives from various firms. The exhibition showcased models of locomotives, EMUs, MEMUs, etc. A theme song based on this historic event was also released. The exhibition featured displays of historically preserved OHE fittings, the journey of railways, the evolution of locomotives, EMUs (local trains), and OHE systems.

Additionally, a VR-based simulation allowed visitors to experience train operations from the cab. The exhibition is an absolute hit among commuters across all ages and walks of life. The exhibition is being held for two days, i.e., 18th and 19th February, 2025.

A Technical Seminar was also organized at Western Railway Headquarters at Churchgate. Experienced retired senior railway officers attended the seminar and shared their insights on the evolution of railway electrification and traction over the years. A technical booklet, table calendar, and souvenir coin were unveiled on this occasion by General Manager of Western Railway, retired senior railway officers, and other senior officers.
