With the changing wind patterns and strong pre-monsoon activity, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the monsoon is likely to arrive early this year. As per IMD, monsoon will arrive in Kerala by May 27. "As of now, we cannot say if monsoon will arrive early in Mumbai and Maharashtra too. However, it is expected to arrive early in Kerala and wind patterns will tell how it progresses," said official from IMD Mumbai.
Mumbai and Maharashtra witnessed strong gusty winds, thunderstorms and pre-monsoon rainfall since last week. As per IMD's weather report, a Yellow Alert for rainfall with thunder/hailstorm is issued for several districts in Maharashtra. However, no alert is issued for Mumbai and MMR, but the region has chances of thundershowers until May 13. The cloudy weather will continue for the whole weak.
For the next 48 hours, Mumbai city and suburbs will have minimum and maximum temperature of 25°C and 34°C, with the partly cloudy skies and possibility of light rains/thundershowers towards the nighy, the IMD Mumbai's weather report says.
"There are high chances of heavy rainfall in the interiors of Maharashtra. In Mumbai, the pre-monsoon rains has brought down the temperature, however, the humidity has increased. This is a typical seasonal weather and high humidity will continue until monsoon arrives," said scientist from IMD Mumbai Sushma Nair.
As per IMD's district weather forecast, Thane and Palghar districts are expected to recieve light rains/thundershowers till May 12, however, for May 13 a Yellow Alert is issued for thunderstorms with lightening and moderate rains.
While for Maharashtra, districts like Pune, Satara and Nashik has been issued Yellow alert for the next five days for thunderstorms with lightening and moderate rainfall.
The IMD's Monsoon 2025 outlook has predicted that the state will receive above normal rainfall in the month of May. While, the monsoon will also be heavier. With the pre-monsoon rainfall coverage and changes in westerly winds pattern, Mumbai can expect early arrival of monsoon this year.
