The much-anticipated Metro Route 9 (Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar) and Metro Route 7A (Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Terminal) have encountered significant delays, according to recent updates from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Originally expected to be operational by September 2022 and March 2023, respectively, the projects have been granted fresh deadlines — June 2025 for Route 9 and July 2026 for Route 7A.
The revised timelines came to light following a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by activist Anil Galgali. In a response from Executive Engineer Sachin Kothavle of the Metro Project Implementation Branch, it was confirmed that both routes have faced setbacks requiring significant deadline extensions.
Galgali criticised the delays, citing increased costs and inefficiency as key concerns. “Delays in ambitious infrastructure projects deprive citizens of timely facilities while inflating project expenses. Public tax money is wasted, and stringent action against contractors is necessary. Blacklisting and punitive measures should be considered,” he stated.
The work orders for both metro corridors were issued on September 9, 2019. Despite initial optimism, construction challenges and other hurdles have slowed progress. Commuters relying on these routes will now have to wait even longer for much-needed relief from Mumbai’s traffic congestion.

Metro Route 9 aims to connect Dahisar East with Mira Bhayandar, easing commuter flow between the western suburbs and Mumbai’s northern regions. Metro Route 7A will provide access from Andheri East to the international airport.
The MMRDA’s repeated project delays have raised questions about planning, execution and accountability in Mumbai’s metro expansion. Citizens and civic activists alike are calling for stronger oversight and timely completion to avoid further disruptions and cost overruns.
