Mumbai: MMRDA Celebrates 50 Years Of Urban Transformation, With Key Leaders Highlighting Its Pivotal Role In Shaping City’s Future

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commemorated its golden jubilee with a grand celebration attended by key leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde. Praising the authority’s monumental role in shaping Mumbai’s urban landscape, Shinde described MMRDA as the “engine of development” that has transformed the lives of millions over the last five decades.

Addressing the audience, Shinde highlighted MMRDA’s unique standing as India’s only government authority handling projects worth over ₹3 lakh crore, adding that the authority’s GDP is poised to exceed ₹25 lakh crore. “MMRDA is not just a development body—it’s a congregation of progress. With unmatched technical, intellectual, and financial expertise, it propels Mumbai into new eras of growth,” he said.

Reflecting on its efficiency, Shinde noted that 75 to 80 percent of projects signed at last year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) have already been executed. He also outlined future opportunities tied to Mumbai’s ambitious urban transformation initiatives, including Mumbai 3.0, driven by the Atal Setu project, and Mumbai 4.0, centered on the Vadhvan Port development.

The event was graced by other prominent leaders, including Culture and Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashish Shelar, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, and Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha. Additional Chief Secretary for Urban Development Aseem Kumar Gupta and other dignitaries echoed Shinde’s sentiments, lauding MMRDA’s pivotal role in enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure and connectivity.

MMRDA’s 50-year legacy encompasses transformative projects such as metro corridors, road networks, and public transport systems that have significantly improved urban mobility and quality of life. The golden jubilee celebration reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive growth as Mumbai strides toward its vision of becoming a global financial and cultural hub.
