Mumbai’s Marol Market is all set for a major revamp. On Sunday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde performed the ‘bhoomi pujan’ for the redevelopment of the municipal market located on Marol Church Road in Andheri East.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is undertaking the redevelopment of the market, which currently houses 94 licensed vendors, including vegetable and fish sellers. The project aims to transform the decades-old market into a modern commercial hub equipped with updated infrastructure and facilities.
According to a BMC statement, architectural consultant BJ Mehta has been appointed to design the new structure. The upgraded complex will be built on a 1,062 sq metre plot, with a total construction area of 3,185.80 sq metres, using the allowed Floor Space Index (FSI) of 3.
The new market building will include a basement, ground floor, and five upper floors
Ground and First Floors: Reserved for existing licensed vendors
Second Floor: Allocated for Project Affected Persons (PAPs)
Third to Fifth Floors: Dedicated to a modern market hall
For improved customer convenience, vegetarian and non-vegetarian stalls will be separated across different floors.
The redesigned structure will also include key amenities
Loading/unloading platforms
Lifts for goods and customers
Parking facilities
Warehouse and cold storage
Differently abled-friendly ramps
Restrooms, staircases, and dedicated lifts
To ensure community involvement, the interior décor will incorporate suggestions from current vendors, and the surrounding area will be landscaped for a better customer experience.
During the estimated two-year construction phase, all licensed vendors will be temporarily relocated.
