Mumbai Dowry Harassment Cases Rise 5.7% In 2026, Even As Dowry Deaths & Suicides Decline
Mumbai recorded a 5.7% rise in dowry-related harassment cases among married women in the first half of 2026, with 260 cases against 246 last year. However, dowry-linked suicides fell from five to three and dowry deaths from three to one. Other crimes against married women, including murder, suicide and non-dowry harassment, also declined.

Mumbai: Cases of married women allegedly subjected to physical and mental harassment over dowry rose 5.7% in Mumbai in the first half of 2026, even as dowry deaths and suicides linked to such harassment declined, according to Mumbai police data.
Police registered 260 dowry-related harassment cases up to June 30 this year, against 246 in the same period in 2025, an increase of 14 cases. Of this year’s cases, 16 remain unsolved. The data covers cases registered up to June 30 in 2025 and 2026.
Harassment linked to dowry showed the sharpest rise among categories involving married women. However, suicides allegedly resulting from dowry-related harassment declined. Three cases were registered in the first half of 2026, compared with five in the same period. The police have solved two of the three cases registered this year.
Dowry death cases also fell, with one case reported during the first six months of 2026 compared with three in the corresponding period of 2025. No murder attributed to dowry was registered in Mumbai during the first half of either year.
The data also shows declines in several other crimes against married women. Murders of married women for reasons other than dowry fell from eight in the first half of 2025 to four this year, while suicides for reasons other than dowry declined from nine to six.
Harassment of married women for reasons other than dowry dropped from 253 cases in the first six months of 2025 to 227 this year. Police have yet to solve 32 cases in this category.
