Mumbai Air Pollution |
Mumbai: A dense layer of smog enveloped South Mumbai’s Nariman Point on Tuesday evening, November 25, sparking fresh concerns about rising air pollution levels in the city. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Colaba's Navy Nagar recorded poor category air with AQI at 223 while Mazgaon recorded AQI at 253, both in 'poor' category at 5.52 PM. The overall AQI of Mumbai is recorded at 211, according to aqi.in.
Videos and images showed a thick haze settling over the coastline, with smog visible above the Arabian Sea. The reduced visibility prompted more worry about deteriorating air quality in the area.
Several other expressed concern and shared visuals from other areas of South Mumbai including Marine Drive showing thick smog.
Not just South Mumbai, one user also shared a video from Andheri West and questioned, "Why there is no ban or curb on construction and development projects in Mumbai what measures are taken for people safety?"
Users took to social media and expressed deep concern regarding the detoriating air quality. A user questioned, "Why is #Mumbai missing the plot on clean air? Moisture? Check. Sea winds. Check. Still AQI in poor category ?"
AQI Recorded In Other Areas Of Mumbai City
According to CPCB, other areas that recorded poor quality air are: Borivali at 216, Chakala in Andheri East at 260, Malad West at 258, Powai at 215. In addition to this, several areas recorded moderate quality air with Sewri at 158, Vasai at 106, Vile Parle West at 158 while Worli at 121.
Will BMC Impose Complete Ban On Construction?
Last year in December, under GRAP IV, the BMC had banned all construction activities, including public and private, in two areas- Borivali East and Byculla, which were consistently recording poor AQI. Hundreds of stop-work notices were also issued across Mumbai. The blanket ban on construction activities was lifted after a week, when the AQI in the two areas came under control.
However this year, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said, “All factors under GRAP IV do not apply to Mumbai. All construction activities will not be stopped immediately. First, there will be a positive intervention, which includes water misting, deep cleaning, actions against polluting bakeries, polluting units etc. For areas like Mazgaon Dock, which on Monday recorded AQI above 300, a decision needs to be taken to stop construction activities, similar to last year.”
