Mumbai: A 200-tonne crane toppled while lifting a Poclain machine to the 16th floor of a building in Kurla East early on August 21, crashing onto nearby houses and vehicles. No fatalities were reported, but several people sustained injuries in the incident.

According to the FIR, the incident took place at around 2.45 am at Saharanivas Seva Sangh in Umarwadi, Qureshi Nagar, Kurla East. Complainant Abu Salem Fazlur Rehman Khan, 30, who runs a chicken business and lives in the area with his family, was asleep at home after dinner when a loud impact shook the house. A portion of the roof collapsed, leaving Khan and his family members injured.

Khan’s relatives Atikur Rehman Khan, Rehan Khan and Nauman Khan also suffered injuries to their hands and legs. The family rushed out of the house and found a large iron boom of a crane lying across several houses and the Burma railway line.

The crane, manufactured by SANY and bearing registration number GJ13AD2842, had been brought to demolish Building No. 1 of Galaxy MHADA Apartment. It was being used to hoist a Poclain machine to the building’s 16th floor when it lost balance and overturned. The crane fell onto nearby houses, cars and autorickshaws, causing extensive damage.

Residents Mustaq Qureshi, Nasrin Qureshi, Aarti Gaud, Raja Gaud, Ahmed Niyaz, Mohammad Riyan and several others were injured in the accident. They were rushed to Sion Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, the crane was removed from the site and the Chunabhatti police began an investigation. Based on Khan’s complaint, police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The FIR alleges that the crane operator and contractor failed to take adequate safety precautions and acted negligently and recklessly. Their alleged negligence resulted in the crane toppling, endangering the lives and safety of people in the area and causing injuries as well as damage to houses and vehicles. Further investigation is underway.
