Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday that most of the 374 km metro network under construction in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will be operational by 2027. He provided an update on the progress of key metro corridors, stating that Metro 3 will be fully operational up to Cuffe Parade by June, while several other metro lines will be completed by the end of the year.

Metro 4A, connecting Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, along with a section of Metro 4 from Kasarvadavali to Cadbury Junction, and Metro 7A, linking Dahisar and Mira Road, are expected to be completed by December 2025. Additionally, the second phase of Metro 2B, which runs between DN Nagar and Mandale, is scheduled for completion by October 2026.

'Metro Line 3 95% Completed,' Says CM Fadnavis

In his reply to the congratulatory motion on Governor CP Radhakrishnan’s address, Fadnavis highlighted that most of the metro projects launched between 2014 and 2019 are nearing completion. He stated that Metro 3 is 95 per cent complete, and security trials have already been conducted.

Metro 4 has achieved 79 per cent completion, with the phase between Cadbury Junction and Gandhi Nagar set to become operational by December 2026. The earlier phase between Kasarvadavali and Cadbury will be launched by the end of this year.

5-KM Underground Stretch For Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro

The Thane Metro, which covers the Thane-Bhiwandi stretch, is also progressing well, with 80 per cent of the work completed. Fadnavis confirmed that the second phase of this metro, connecting Bhiwandi and Kalyan, will be constructed underground instead of elevated. This decision was made to avoid large-scale rehabilitation in a 5 km stretch along the route.

Providing further updates, Fadnavis stated that Metro 9, which links Andheri to the international airport, is currently 55 per cent complete and is expected to be operational by December 2026.

The expansion of the metro network aims to enhance connectivity and ease congestion across MMR. With multiple metro lines nearing completion, Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure is set for a remarkable transformation in the coming years.
