Mumbai: A decomposed body of a woman was found inside a pink suitcase near the Monkey Hill area on the Mumbai-Pune railway route lying close to the railway tracks, as per reports on Thursday. The shocking discovery led to an immediate response from both the Lonavala police and the railway authorities.
Passenger Noticed Suspicious Suitcase Near Track
The suitcase was first spotted by a passenger on a train travelling from Mumbai to Pune. As the train passed the Monkey Hill point, the commuter noticed the oddly placed pink suitcase near the tracks and alerted the railway police. Acting swiftly, the Lonavala Railway Police reached the spot and took possession of the suitcase. Visuals shared on internet by Marathi news portal Lokshahi show glimpses of the suitcase lying near the tracks.
Upon opening it, police discovered the woman’s body in a severely decomposed state, raising suspicions of foul play. A panchnama was conducted at the site and the body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, reported Maharashtra Times.
While initial investigations are underway, officials have yet to confirm whether the case involves murder or suicide. However, given the condition of the body, police suspect it could be a case of homicide. Efforts are ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased woman.
Police Probe Underway
The suitcase and the surrounding area have been carefully examined for any possible clues. Senior officers are closely monitoring the case, and technical teams are analysing CCTV footage from nearby locations as well as other forensic details to aid the investigation. Police stated that confirmation of the cause of death will only be possible after the post-mortem report is received.
Woman Killed, Body Thrown In Sack In Palghar
In a similar case reported earlier this month, a decomposed body of an unidentified woman, estimated to be in her twenties, was found stuffed in a sack and floating in the Wagh River at Ghatkarpada in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on April 1. The body was found after local villagers noticed a suspicious sack in the river along the Nashik-Mokhada-Jawhar Road and immediately alerted the police.
Upon arrival at the scene, local police retrieved the sack and were shocked to find the woman's body inside, in an advanced state of decomposition. The body was sent to a nearby hospital for a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Initial investigations suggest foul play, with police suspecting that the woman was strangled before her body was packed into the sack and dumped into the river in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence. Police then registered a case under sections 103(1) (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
