The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the establishment of a dedicated Maharashtra State Commission for Scheduled Tribes. The Cabinet also sanctioned ₹4.2 crore and approved the creation of 26 new posts for this commission.
At the national level, separate commissions exist for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes due to the differing nature of issues related to each community. In line with this structure, and based on a recommendation made during the 51st Tribal Advisory Council meeting, the state has decided to form an independent commission exclusively for Scheduled Tribes. This move is seen as a significant step toward addressing the specific needs and concerns of the Scheduled Tribes population in the state.
The new commission will be structured similarly to the State Scheduled Castes Commission, comprising one Chairperson and four non-government members. To support its operations, the Cabinet has approved the creation of 26 new posts. Additionally, a budget of ₹4.2 crore has been sanctioned to cover expenses including salaries, allowances, office rent, furniture, electricity, telecommunication, and fuel.
