IN PICS: Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade At Worli Gets New Underground Parking

Mumbai: The newly finished sea-facing promenade in Mumbai measures 7.47 km in length and is 20 metres wide, extending alongside the Coastal Road from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli side of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The promenade features an underground parking facility that significantly addresses the parking problem commonly seen in Mumbai.

The subterranean parking at the Mumbai Coastal Promenade represents a progressive approach to address the parking dilemma in the city, which significantly impacts road transport. Here are several characteristics of the Promenade underground parking:

Includes underground parking facilities beneath the walkway. Adjacent to Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction, opposite Worli Dairy, two parking areas for 396 vehicles are accessible through Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.

Haji Ali is revamping bus parking; Amarsons Garden features an Integrated Command and Control Center for managing traffic. Promenade is a 7.5 km maritime stretch with six pedestrian underpasses, partially open at 5.5 km. Recently completed, it runs 7.47 km long and 20 metres wide, paralleling Coastal Road from Priyadarshini Park to Worli end.

Access to the promenade is currently restricted with barricades, though completed sections are set to open in July. Initial entries are through Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Mahalaxmi Temple, and three Worli points, with unauthorized access noted via a pedestrian underpass.

Inauguration is pending Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' schedule. BMC construction updates include clearance from Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority. Part of the 5.25 km promenade near Haji Ali is delayed due to underground parking, awaiting state government grand opening approval.

Haji Ali parking project will start post-monsoon in October. The promenade segment by Lotus jetty will take two years. A 1.25 km stretch near JK Kapur Chowk is set to open next month. Reliance Industries is developing 53 hectares of reclaimed space under a ₹400-crore CSR-funded project.

The Coastal Road project, costing ₹13,984 crore, includes a 10.58-km, 8-lane expressway from Worli to Marine Drive, with a dedicated promenade for all users.
