First Flight Turns Into Tarmac Protest: SpiceJet Passenger Revolts Over Three-Hour Delay & Faulty AC
Aamir Kazi staged a sit-in protest on the Delhi Airport tarmac after alleging that SpiceJet flight SG-800 to Mumbai was delayed by nearly three hours and passengers waited inside a non-air-conditioned aircraft. Kazi said the incident was his first air travel experience and raised concerns over passenger comfort, communication and accountability in aviation services.

Mumbai: What was meant to be a swift journey during a family emergency transformed into a night of direct action at Delhi Airport, as a first-time air traveller led a tarmac demonstration against SpiceJet’s operational failures. The passenger alleged that the flight was delayed by about three hours and flyers were made to sit inside the aircraft without air conditioning.
AIYF Leader Aamir Kazi Claims Poor Passenger Handling On SpiceJet Flight
All India Youth Federation’s Maharashtra state joint secretary and Mumbai President, Aamir Kazi, had booked his maiden flight on SpiceJet from New Delhi to Mumbai on August 14. The flight SG-800, scheduled to depart Indira Gandhi International Airport at 10.30pm, suffered severe delays, leaving stranded passengers in the terminal with minimal updates.
According to Kazi, boarding finally commenced in the early hours of the morning but the conditions inside the Boeing aircraft rapidly deteriorated. Passengers reported that the air-conditioning system was non-functional, creating a stifling, oppressive environment inside the sealed cabin. Faced with an unresponsive crew and escalating discomfort, Kazi took the unprecedented step of disembarking the aircraft and returning to the Delhi tarmac to stage a peaceful sit-in protest.
Kazi Says First Flight Experience Turned Into Protest Over Passenger Rights
Talking to The Free Press Journal, Kazi said, "What was supposed to be my first experience of air travel turned into an unexpected protest against poor passenger management and inadequate basic facilities. Due to an emergency, I chose air travel for the first time in my life, expecting timely service, professional management and basic passenger comfort. However, my experience with SpiceJet was far from what passengers should reasonably expect.
The dissent on the apron forced ground handlers and airline staff to address the grievances directly. According to a flight tracking platform, the aircraft eventually took off at 1.24am – nearly three hours behind schedule – and touched down at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 3.02am.

The political activist framed the ordeal as a symptom of broader structural issues within India’s commercial aviation market. "This incident raises a larger question about the accountability of private air transport companies. Air travel cannot be treated merely as a profit-making business where passenger concerns are secondary. Passengers pay for a service and have the right to safety, dignity, comfort, timely information and accountability,” he said, calling for stronger regulation and public oversight across the aviation sector.
Notably, SpiceJet has been among the worst-performing airlines in on-time performance for a few months. In July, SpiceJet flights departed and arrived on time in only 34.6% of its domestic operations across the ten major airports. It also recorded the second-highest cancellation rate at 8.58% and also saw the second-most passenger complaints among all the Indian airlines.
