Chain-Snatching Accused Assaults Police Constable Inside Panvel Court Premises, Fresh FIR Registered

Navi Mumbai: A habitual chain-snatching accused allegedly assaulted a police constable inside the Panvel court premises after he was denied permission to meet his relatives while being produced for a remand hearing. The accused also allegedly abused senior police officers and created a ruckus, prompting Panvel City Police to register a fresh case against him for assaulting a public servant and obstructing government duty.

Bhiwandi Resident Arrested In Chain-Snatching Case

The accused has been identified as Sadik Akhtar Mohammad Khan (37), a resident of Bhiwandi. He was arrested by Khandeshwar Police last week in connection with a chain-snatching case. After the expiry of his police custody, he was brought to the new Panvel court at around 4.30 pm on August 5 for a remand hearing.

According to police, some of Khan's relatives had gathered outside the court premises. The accused allegedly insisted on meeting them, but police personnel refused permission citing security concerns.

Accused Allegedly Demanded To Meet Relatives Outside Court

Police said the refusal enraged Khan, who allegedly began abusing the senior police inspector and other officers on duty. As the situation escalated, Police Constable Manoj Jadhav intervened to pacify him. However, Khan allegedly attacked the constable, punching and kicking him before other policemen overpowered him and restored order.

The accused was subsequently produced before the court, which granted him bail in the chain-snatching case. However, Panvel City Police later registered a separate FIR against him for assaulting a police officer on duty, using abusive language and obstructing a public servant from discharging official duties.

"An FIR has been registered against the accused for assaulting a police constable and obstructing a public servant while performing his duty. The incident occurred after he was denied permission to meet his relatives due to security reasons. Further legal action is being taken," a police officer from Panvel City Police Station said.

Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
