Mumbai: Minister of State for home, Yogesh Kadam, has proposed enhancing the punishment for illegal slaughter of animals from five years imprisonment to 10 years. Kadam announced in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that the government will amend the law by the winter session and introduce a steeper fine to deter repeat offenders.

The announcement came in response to a calling attention motion raised by MLA Sanjay Upadhyay regarding a recent incident of illegal slaughter in Badlapur (West). On June 9, the police raided an unauthorised slaughter site in the Dargah Mohalla area and seized 510kg of beef along with a live calf. A case was registered against a man identified as Kaif, who is now in custody.

According to police records, Kaif is a habitual offender, with 12 similar cases registered against him. The existing law provides for a maximum sentence of five years for such offences, but Kadam stated that habitual violators deservemore stringent punishment.

Kadam said the home department will also launch a special state-wide campaign targeting illegal slaughter houses. He said clear instructions have already been issued to the police and the agencies concerned to identify and act against such illegal operations.

“The government is determined to prevent such incidents from recurring. Special drives will be conducted to collect intelligence and initiate strict action,” he said.

Kadam said, “Considering the sensitivity of the issue and public emotions, we are working to strengthen the coordination between cow protection organisations and the police department. Ensuring compliance with the law and preserving communal harmony are both top priorities,” he added.
