Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore, the cleanest city in the country, now also leads the solar revolution in Western Madhya Pradesh (Malwa-Nimar region) with the installation of 13,800 rooftop solar plants, more than double the number in the rest of the region combined. The push for solar energy adoption in Malwa-Nimar region has gained significant momentum with rooftop solar installations reaching over 25,250 locations as of February 12.

Among these, Indore alone accounts for 13,800 rooftop solar plants. This remarkable growth has been fueled by the PM Suryaghar Yojana, which has encouraged more than 12,000 new consumers to switch to solar energy between February 2024 and February 2025.

While Indore continues to lead the way, other urban and semi-urban areas in the region are also gradually embracing solar power.  Rooftop solar installations can now be seen on residential buildings, commercial complexes, government offices, municipal waste transfer stations and even vacant government and private lands.

220 MW solar capacity and rising interest

With the growing number of installations, the total rooftop solar capacity in Western MP has crossed 220 MW. "The rising interest in solar energy is reflected in the daily influx of applications at electricity offices and online company portals. The 'Mera Chhajha, Meri Bijli' (My Roof, My Electricity) spirit is driving urban households and businesses to switch to solar ensuring energy self-sufficiency while supporting environmental conservation," said West Discom managing director Anoop Kumar Singh.
