West Bengal: Protests Erupt At Jogesh Chandra Law College After Outsider Allegedly Threatens Saraswati Puja Celebration

Kolkata: After RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, now the ‘We want justice’ slogan was heard amid Saraswati Puja celebration on Sunday in Jogesh Chandra law college in south Kolkata after alleged outsider Shabbir Ali threatened to prevent the celebration.

The protesting students urged to take action against Ali after he had allegedly threatened the women students of the college and also that being an outsider he had entered the college premises during Saraswati Puja celebrations.

“Our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a former student of this college and we don’t want any political colour here inside the campus but demand safety. We are not safe and want to speak with our education minister,” said Reshma Ghosh, a protesting woman student of the law college.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu and TMC Kolkata (South) MP Mala Roy visited the college amid ‘We want Justice’ chants.

Talking to the media, the TMC MP said that on the day of puja she doesn’t want to hear slogans like ‘We want Justice’.

“Everything will be taken care of by our Chief Minister. She had said that everyone can do Saraswati Puja. On such an auspicious occasion the students should enjoy themselves rather shouting ‘We want Justice’ slogan. If the students want to discuss something, we will certainly sit and listen to them,” mentioned the TMC Kolkata (South) MP.

Notably, earlier, following a complaint from law college students that the outsiders had taken control of their preparations, Calcutta High Court had ordered police to monitor Saraswati Puja of this college and also instructed videography of the entire puja.

Mohammad Shabbir Ali however, claimed that he is not an outsider but a former student of the college that is the reason why he had entered the college premises during the puja.

Biswanath Chakraborty said that such an incident clearly shows ‘lawlessness’ in the state.

“Saraswati Puja was the most secular puja and everyone irrespective of religion used to take part,” added Chakraborty.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the ruling party had made this state another Bangladesh.
