Mulayam Singh Yadav last rites: Thousands reach his native village Safai, PM may also attend | File

The body of ace socialist leader, former chief minister and defence minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was brought to his native village Safai, Uttar Pradesh on late Monday afternoon.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had breathed his last on Monday morning at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon where he was undergoing treatment for the past two weeks. He will be cremated in his native village of Safai, UP on Tuesday afternoon.

The ambulance carrying the body of Mulayam Singh Yadav, reached Safai via Agra-Lucknow and Yamuna Expressway. It stopped at several places as party workers had gathered to pay homage. Thousands of people were seen when the body reached Safai and the slogan Netaji (he was fondly called Netaji by his supporters) Amar Rahe was raised by people. Mulayam, 82, was suffering from urine infection, high blood pressure and low oxygen level when he was admitted to Medanta Hospital.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath along with senior minister in his cabinet Swatantra Dev Singh reached Safai to pay their tributes. Congress state president Brijlal Khabri, Aradhana Misra, Apna Dal President and union minister Anupriya Patel and several other leaders also reached Safai on Monday evening to pay homage. As the crowd at Safai began to swell, the district administration called for police force from nearby districts to help manage it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi might also reach Safai on Tuesday to attend the last rites of Mulayam Singh Yadav. According to officials, Special Protection Group (SPG) team members have been arriving at Safai. Defence minister Rajnath Singh, JD U leader K.C. Tyagi, Union Minister SP Singh Baghel, and Deputy CM of Bihar Tejasvi Yadav will also attend the cremation of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel will also reach Safai on Tuesday.
