Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP and chief spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya is all set to become the next state president of the saffron camp in West Bengal.
Bhattacharya seemed to be the sole contender of the post as nobody else had filed nomination for the post.
Flanked by present state president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, Bhattacharuya had filed his nomination on Wednesday.
Talking to the media, present state president and MoS Sukanta Majumdar said that after every six years the state president changes in the saffron camp.
“BJP is an organized party and the post of the state president is temporary. Yesterday I was in the chair and tomorrow someone else will continue the legacy. The name is yet to be declared officially by central leader and MP Ravishankar Prasad,” said Majumdar.
Notably, on July 3, the welcome ceremony of the new state president will be held at Kolkata’s Science City Auditorium in presence of central leaders led by Ravishankar Prasad.
Shamik Bhattacharya informed the media, “The party president directed me to file my nomination. I will not deviate from the path I have followed for 42 years.”
Incidentally, Bhattacharya, an old Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker, tasted his first electoral success in 2014 by winning Basirhat (South) Assembly seat when BJP had no MLAs in the state. The central leaders have rested hope on Bhattacharya in the run up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
