Lucknow: The city witnessed unrest on Saturday (March 8) morning after an e-rickshaw driver was allegedly beaten unconscious by police personnel during an anti-encroachment drive at the Nishatganj intersection. The incident led to a protest, with locals blocking the road and raising slogans against the police.
Police Crackdown Turns Violent
The crackdown was part of routine efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city, as complaints of jams caused by e-rickshaws and autos at major intersections are frequent. Around 11:30 AM, while clearing the area, police got into an altercation with an e-rickshaw driver named Noor. The argument escalated, and eyewitnesses claim the policemen assaulted him so severely that he fainted on the spot.
As soon as the incident occurred, passersby and fellow drivers gathered in protest, condemning the police's actions. The situation quickly intensified, with people blocking the intersection and demanding accountability.
Authorities Deny Allegations, Probe Underway
Upon receiving reports of the ruckus, additional police forces were deployed to manage the crowd. Noor was taken to the civil hospital for treatment. However, authorities have downplayed the incident. The Mahanagar police station in-charge stated that the driver fainted due to fasting, while ACP Mahanagar confirmed only a minor thumb injury.
Despite official statements, the incident has sparked outrage, with an investigation now underway.
