Delhi: A high alert has been sounded in Delhi after an explosion took place near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday. A car exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, triggering a fire that damaged several vehicles and left at least eight people have been killed and 24 injured. All eight died before reaching the hospital. The area has been cordoned off and there is heavy police presence at the spot.
Security agencies placed Delhi on high alert. The police have cordoned off the area and forensic teams are examining the site to determine the cause of the explosion.
"Fifteen people have been brought to Lok Nayak Hospital. Eight of them died before reaching the hospital. Three are seriously injured. One is in stable condition," Medical Superintendent of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
“It’s too early to comment, I’m just heading to the spot to assess the situation,” DIG CRPF Kishor Prasad said.
Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh and Kolkata have also been put under high alert following the incident in the national capital.
Police checks are being conducted in crowded areas across the city. A heavy police force is carrying out checking operations in different locations.
Visuals from the spot have surfaced on social media, showing massive flames erupting as a crowd gathered to watch vehicles being gutted by fire. According to eyewitnesses, the explosion was so powerful that glass windows of nearby shops shattered from the impact.
After the explosion, a suspicious object was found lying near a shop.
