Kolkata: Calcutta High Court’s Justice Tirthankar Ghosh asks Commissioner of Kolkata Police to give a written undertaking that traffic will not be affected on July 21 during Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s annual Martyr’s Day programme.
According to court sources, Justice Ghosh had asked police to ensure smooth traffic so that no one including the lawyers of the court face any problems during TMC’s programme at the Dorina crossing in Esplanade area.
The court sources had also mentioned that the Justice had also said that after the Commissioner submits the affidavit, he will impose certain restrictions but will not change the venue.
The Advocate General representing the state government submitted that such disruptions were common for any protest, and also that measures would be taken to minimise them.
Notably, Since 2011, the TMC holds this annual Martyr’s Day programme on July 21 in commemoration of a 1993 police firing at protestors from the Congress which led to the death of 13 people. The opposition parties had welcomed the verdict of the Calcutta High Court.
