Comedian Samay Raina was seen dodging the media as he appeared at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, in connection to the case against him for allegedly mocking persons with disabilities. The SC had summoned five stand-up comedians -- Samay, Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar, Sonali Thakar, Vipul Goyal, and Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai -- in the case.
Samay was seen reaching the court around noon and he looked unrecognisable in a clean-shaven look and neatly-trimmed hair. He turned up in formal attire, which was in stark contrast to his stage persona. He was seen accompanied by his team of lawyers as he reached the court while being surrounded by the media.
As Samay made his way inside the court, he was hounded by the media, but he refrained from interacting with them. When a few paps and media questioned him about the case, he responded, "Wahi karenge na baat", meaning that he will say whatever he had to in front of the judges.
For those unversed, an organisation had filed a petition in the SC seeking ban on the broadcast of derogatory and denigrating content on the digital media against persons with disability. The NGO accused Samay of insensitive remarks on persons with serious conditions, requiring high-costing drugs and treatment options for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
The court then took particular note of Samay's controversial remarks during his stand-up show, in which he had seemingly made fun of a situation in which a baby needed an injection worth Rs 16 crore for the treatment of SMA. "We are really disturbed by the allegations," the SC said.
