Students distanced from lectures? MU starts IDOL admission

Mumbai: Admissions for various courses of the Institute of Distance and Open Studies of the University of Mumbai started on June 25, 2022, and will go on till July 30, 2022. However, since 20th June itself, a variety of students were seen lined up outside the IDOL office at Mumbai University.

The distance learning module allows students to appear for exams without having to attend any lectures at a college. To understand what makes students trade their professors for self-study, the Free Press Journal spoke with a few who were scrambling to enroll in these courses.

“I am too busy preparing for my MPSC examination, I don’t think I will be able to make time for lectures, in case I have any doubts I just refer to YouTube,” said Vivek Sawalkar who was inquiring about distance learning for MA Sociology.

“Professors and colleges are often unreliable, at times they are not able to cover the entire syllabus either. This module helps me save a lot of time,” said Vivek.

Some students were already caught up with their day jobs, studying to strengthen their resumes. “It is not possible to attend morning lectures when you are working full time,” said Nikita Shiravle.

“This is a convenient manner of getting a degree. M.com will certainly help me land a job with a better pay scale,” she added.

Aayushi Doshi dropped out of the Mithibai College in Mumbai. “ I could not pass one paper in my BA. Distance Learning helps me get done with this degree done faster,” she said.

Numerous courses, including BA, B.Com, BSc IT, and MA Part-I for History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Marathi, English, and Hindi, are available via the IDOL admissions process. In addition to M.Com Part I and II (Accounts/Management), MA Parts I and II of Geography and Education are also offered. Courses in IT, computer science, and mathematics for the MSc Part I and II, are available at the university.
