Sweet Tooth May Cost More This Festive Season; Sugar Prices Rise By 40% In Last 1 Month Across Madhya Pradesh |
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The rise in the price of sugar may make sweets dearer. Makers and sellers of sweets in the city say that if sugar prices do not come down soon, they will be forced to increase the prices of sweets ahead of the festive season.
Sugar prices have increased by more than 40% in last one month and there are no indications that they will be reduced soon. Sugar is a key ingredient in sweets, and demand for sweets rises during the festive season, which may make sweets costlier.
The manager of a well-known sweets shop in New Market, Raghvendra Yadav, said, “We have not increased the prices yet. But there is a possibility that the price of sweets will increase in the coming days. Besides sugar, desi ghee had also become costlier.
Ghevar was selling for Rs 980 per kg last year. Now it is priced at Rs 1,050 per kg at our shop because of the increase in the price of ghee. However, the prices of most other sweets remain more or less the same.” For instance, phirni was selling for Rs 650 a kg last year and the price is the same this year.
The manager of another major sweets shop, Udit Agarwal, said that they would raise the prices of sweets if sugar prices did not come down. “We are waiting to see what turn the sugar market takes.
Over the past one year, the prices of dry fruits have also gone up by 20%. That has also increased the production cost of sweets in which dry fruits are used.”
Nikhil, another shop owner said, “One kg price of sugar has gone up from Rs 32 to Rs 72. We cannot absorb this huge hike ourselves. We will have to pass it on to the consumers.” Rajjan Thakur, manager of Manohar Sweets Shop, MP Nagar, said, “We are yet to decide whether to increase rates. We are waiting and watching.”
Tea, coffee to also get costlier
Mukesh Tiwari who runs a tea shop in New Market said, “Following the increase in price of sugar, I plan to raise the price of tea from Rs 10 to 12 a cup and of coffee from Rs 10 to Rs 15 from next month.”
