MP: Assembly Members Bat For Maximum Sittings

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Speaker and many other senior members of ruling and Opposition party were of the view that maximum Assembly meetings should be held so that public issues can be discussed at length. They expressed views during the discussion held to mark the first session of Madhya Pradesh.

The first session of Assembly was held on December 17, 1956 that had continued till January 17, 1957. Shedding light on the glorious past of State Assembly, Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar batted for maximum meetings, saying that treasury bench and Opposition should hold discussion on how to increase the number of sittings of the house.

Congress MLA and ex-Deputy Speaker Dr Rajendra Singh expressed concern on growing trend wherein the numbers of Assembly meetings are reduced gradually. He said there used to be 55 to 60 sittings of Assembly earlier.

Now, the number of Assembly meetings has been reduced to 20, which is matter of concern, he said. Former Speaker and BJP MLA Dr Sitasharan Sharma said that owing to ruckus in Lok Sabha and Assembly, the public faith is declining on legislature. He cited the need to redress public grievances in a more effective manner.

Former minister and BJP MLA Gopal Bhargava also said that there should be maximum Assembly meetings.
