For 1st Time, 6-Month Training Plan Proposed For Police Orderlies

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): For the first time in Madhya Pradesh, a structured six-month training programme has been proposed for the police department’s tradesmen, also known as orderlies. The training wing has sent a proposal to police headquarters seeking permission to provide this extended training.

These orderlies, though officially constables, currently receive minimal training. At present, they undergo about 90 days of basic training conducted independently by range DIGs, without any standardised syllabus. Only the exam or test results are forwarded to PHQ for approval.

The tradesmen perform housekeeping, cooking and other support duties at officers’ bungalows, units and messes, but officials say this limited and uncoordinated training fails to prepare them adequately. They emphasise that these tradesmen must be disciplined policemen, capable of performing their duties with professionalism and expertise.

Expert panel for course design

ADG Training Raja Babu Singh said a committee has been proposed to formulate and standardise the new training syllabus. The panel will be chaired by the DIG of Rewa range and will include SP of Police Training School Umaria, Reserve Inspectors from Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ratlam, Ujjain and Khargone, as well as inspectors nominated by the training schools at Tighra, Rewa and Indore. All deliberations will take place online, and the committee is expected to submit its report within three months.

BSF’s 42-week format

Madhya Pradesh police may customise their training programme by drawing inspiration from the Border Security Force, where tradesmen undergo a 42-week basic course. The proposed course in MP is likely to be condensed to about 24 weeks, including three weeks focused specifically on trade-related skills such as cooking and maintenance. Officials believe this balance of discipline and trade-specific training will better prepare orderlies to meet their responsibilities.

4,447 orderlies across MP

Currently, the number of orderlies allotted depends on officer rank. IG-rank officers have one head constable and three constables, DIGs are allotted one head constable and two constables, SPs get two constables, and ASPs, DSPs and Inspectors receive one constable each. Altogether, 4,447 police personnel serve as orderlies at police officers’ bungalows across the state.
