16 Kuno Cheetahs In Open Set To Experience 1st Monsoon

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After adapting well to the harsh summer conditions, the 16 cheetahs moving in the open in the jungles of Kuno will be facing their first monsoon.

These cheetahs have already demonstrated great adaptability skills in the summer season, facing temperatures as high as 45°C. 

Forest officials of Kuno are upbeat about the big cats experiencing the rains. A park official said it was a matter of excitement to see how the cheetahs, including 11 cubs, would survive in the monsoon.

During the initial stages of the Cheetah project in 2023, some cheetahs were radio collared and released into the jungles of Kuno. They developed an infection around their neck due to radio collars, and a few, including Suraj, eventually died because of this. After this, all the cheetahsmoving in the open range were brought back inside the enclosures.

More translocations in the wings

More cheetahs are likely to be translocated from the Kuno National Park to the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary of Mandsaur. The state government has given its approval to the translocation, but forest officials are awaiting a suitable time to proceed.

More than a month ago, two cheetahs were shifted from Kuno to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, and they have adapted well to the wild conditions.
