Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha warrior, won several decisive battles that shaped Indian history. Here are seven iconic victories that are still celebrated today

Battle of Pratapgad (1659): Shivaji Maharaj lured Afzal Khan into a trap and killed him, marking a major victory against the Adil Shahi Sultanate. It established his military prowess and strengthened Maratha rule
Battle of Kolhapur (1659): Despite being outnumbered, Shivaji’s guerrilla tactics led to a decisive win, further proving Maratha dominance in the region
Battle of Pavan Khind (1660): A small Maratha force, led by Baji Prabhu Deshpande, held off the enemy to ensure Shivaji’s safe escape. This heroic sacrifice is honored as a symbol of loyalty and bravery
Surgical Strike on Shaista Khan (1663): Shivaji conducted a daring night raid on Shaista Khan’s palace in Pune, injuring him and forcing the Mughals to retreat. This audacious attack humiliated the Mughal Empire
Escape from Agra (1666): Shivaji was imprisoned in Agra but masterminded a brilliant escape disguised in fruit baskets. This proved his strategic genius and defiance of Mughal power
Battle of Sinhagad (1670): Tanaji Malusare, Shivaji’s general, led a daring attack to recapture the fort. Though Tanaji was martyred, the Marathas won. Shivaji famously said, "Gad aala, pan Sinha gela" ("We got the fort, but lost the lion")
