Every year, on the 27th of September, people all around the globe celebrate World Tourism Day, a day to promote awareness about the role of tourism in the international community and to show how it influences social, cultural, political, and economic values around the world.
History
Ever since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has observed World Tourism Day on this day. The date was chosen since the UNWTO's Statutes were adopted on that day in 1970. The UNWTO's Statutes, which are regarded a watershed moment in global tourism, were approved on this day in 1970. And on September 27, 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) commemorated the first World Tourism Day as an international event. The UNWTO Statutes contains the Statutes, the Rules of Procedure of the UNWTO's governing bodies and main Committees, as well as the most important documents related to the status of the UNWTO as a specialized agency of the United Nations.
Significance of the day
The goal of this day is to promote awareness about the impact of tourism on various important aspects of the worldwide community, like its social, cultural, political, and economic values.
Since most of the World Heritage Sites are now closed as a result of the pandemic, and young people in rural regions are three times more likely to be unemployed, it is even more critical to promote awareness about the tourism sector.
Theme for this year's World Tourism Day
The theme for World Tourism Day 2021 is "Tourism for Inclusive Growth." Cote d'Ivoire will host this year's official celebration, which will honour tourism's ability to support inclusive development and the role it plays in encouraging respect while creating opportunities for millions of people around the world.
