A model and medical student who appeared on the cover of Vogue has reportedly committed suicide at a dormitory hostel in Bangladesh. Raudha Athif, 21-year-old medical student at Islami Bank Medical College in Rajshahi city was found dead in her room on Wednesday. In an apparent suicide, Raudha Athif, was discovered by her roommates on Wednesday afternoon, an hour before cops rushed to the scene.
The 21-year-old reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself via a scarf she owned. One of her roommates cut the scarf with a knife in an initial attempt to relieve her, as they thought she might still be alive. Mahmuda Begum, the dorm’s superintendent, described the young model as always looking happy and noted “it is hard to believe she would commit suicide.”
The model’s first major breakthrough was a stunning image taken by photographer Sotti called ‘Maldivian Girl With Aqua Blue Eyes,’ which was praised by the former president of the Maldives over social media. Shot by Maldivian photographer Sotti for a project, the stunning image of her emerging from a gorgeous blue sea went viral, eventually helping her land on the cover of Vogue India in October last year.
“Modeling is a hobby rather than a career for me, since I’m studying to become a doctor,” Athif told Vogue during her interview in the fall of 2016, when she was featured as one of six models in the diversity issue. Athif was a high honour student and earned a GPA-5 on her secondary school certificate examination from Hiriya School in the Maldives. Maldivian Athif had been living in the hostel, mainly for foreign students, near the college campus since last year. Heartbroken friends and family have written tributes to Athif on a Facebook page set up in memory of the student.
