London: Former Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has become the country’s first directly elected President.

With almost all the votes counted, Erdogan has already cemented his victory by securing 52 percent of the votes against 38 percent won by his main rival, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, reported the BBC.

Hailing his victory as the victory of Turkey, the new President promised his supporters that his win will herald a period of social reconciliation and that they must leave the old discussions in the old Turkey.

The President has already served three terms as Prime Minister since 2003 and is known for bringing in economic policies during his tenure that bolstered the economy.
