Stockholm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the achievements of Indian athletes at the Commonwealth Games and especially mentioned pugilist MC Mary Kom and shuttler Saina Nehwal in his address to the Indian diaspora in Sweden. Addressing the Indian community at the Stockholm University here yesterday, Modi said that India’s stature has increased at the world stage.
Lauding the achievements of Indian athletes, the prime minister said, “The achievements of Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal make our hearts swell in pride.” Mary Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to claim a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in Australia while badminton star Nehwal won women’s singles gold at the Games this month. In his address, Modi said the country is going through a period of change and the government is working day and night for the country’s prestige, self respect and taking it to new heights in the 21st century. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, who was also present at the event, lauded the Indian diaspora for its contribution to the Nordic country.
