Washington : Famed Hollywood actress Meryl Streep, music icon Stevie Wonder and journalist Tom Brokaw are among the 19 Americans who would receive Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honour for their “extraordinary contributions”.
The awards, announced by President Barack Obama, will be presented on November 24 at the White House in a ceremony marking their achievements.
The medal is the highest honor granted to civilians in the US and honors contributions to security, world peace and cultural achievement.
“From scientists who kept America on the cutting edge to public servants who help write new chapters in our American story, these citizens have made extraordinary contributions to our country and the world,” Obama said in a statement.
Music composer Stephen Sondheim and actress Marlo Thomas will also receive the award.
Republican John Dingell of Michigan, the longest-serving Congressman in American history, and Ethel Kennedy, widow of former Senator Robert Kennedy are also among the award recipients.
