Dhaka : Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the attack on a Shia mosque in Bangladesh when gunmen fired indiscriminately at worshippers killing one person and injuring three others, the second attack on the minority community amid a series of incidents linked to the dreaded terror group.
US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activity, said on its website that the Islamic State group had claimed responsibility for the yesterday’s attack in a message posted on Twitter.
Three gunmen stormed into the Shia mosque in Bogra district during the evening prayers on Thursday and opened fire on the worshippers mith machine guns, killing the 70-year-old muezzin, who calls Muslims to prayer, and injuring three others, including the imam. The gunmen fled the scene crossing a wall after locking the mosque’s main gate from inside apparently to prevent people in the neighbourhood to come to the rescue of the victims, sources said.
