Beijing: One person was killed and 500 vehicles trapped when a mudslide struck a highway in China’s Xinjiang region.

The sudden mudslide blocked a section of the 314 National Highway near the Akto County of Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture of Kizilsu, said Dong Boli, head of the rescue operation, yesterday.

The mudslide threw a sport utility vehicle carrying six persons before burying it and trapped at least 500 vehicles.

Five of the injured were quickly rescued and one person was killed whose body was recovered today, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Rescue operations are underway to clear the road.
