Millions of Americans are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, ignoring the advice of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and health experts to stay at home.
With the recent exponential surge in COVID-19 cases nationwide, the CDC has urged Americans to stay home and not travel for Thanksgiving, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.
"Travel may increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. Postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year," the CDC said in their recently released new guideline.
The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with, said the guideline.
Yet more than three million travelers passed through security at America's airports over the weekend, according to the US Transportation Security Administration.
According to Daily Mail report, At noon on Tuesday, data from FlightRadar24 showed 6,972 planes crisscrossing the U.S., slightly down from last year but even more than at the same time and day in 2018.
The U.S. flights on Tuesday accounted for 65 percent of worldwide planes in the air, up from less than half each of the last two years.
Nearly a million people have traveled by plane every day since the holiday travel season began on Friday, according to screening data from the Transportation Security Administration.
Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said he worries that crowds at airports are going to get the country into "even more trouble" than it is in right now.
He added that new COVID-19 infections contracted over the Thanksgiving holiday will not become evident until weeks later, making it "very difficult" as the virus could spiral out of control heading into the December holiday season.
The number of new COVID-19 cases in the United States has skyrocketed to all-time highs recently, averaging more than 170,000 a day, according to the CDC data.
It took only six days for the country to add over one million infections to a record high of 12 million cases on Saturday.

The United States has recorded highest daily fatalities due to COVID-19 since May with 2,146 deaths on Tuesday, according to data by John Hopkins University (JHU).
With this, the death toll of the country due to COVID-19 has reached 2,59,925, CNN reported.
This is 21st time the country has reported over 2,000 coronavirus fatalities in a day. The US also reported 172,935 new coronavirus infections Tuesday, according to JHU. The nationwide totals now stand at 12,591,163 confirmed cases.
