Kiev: A total of 568 Ukrainian troops have been killed since the start of government’s military operation against pro-independence insurgents in eastern regions nearly four months ago, the military said Monday.

Around 2,120 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the confrontation with insurgents, Xinhua quoted Security and Defence Council spokesperson Andriy Lysenko as saying.

Since Sunday, six Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 24 wounded in the conflict, Lysenko added.

Intense fighting has been raging in Ukraine’s restive east since mid-April, when the government troops launched offensive against militants to regain control over seized cities and towns.

According to the UN estimates, the conflict has left over 1,500 people dead and at least 4,390  wounded.
