Pakistan: Mission Impossible

Mumbai: Pakistan’s chances of making it to the semi-finals were essentially hinging on India and New Zealand beating England. Pakistan are currently placed fifth on the World Cup points table with 9 points while New Zealand are currently placed fourth with 11 points from nine games. But Pakistan still have a game in hand and play against Bangladesh on Friday. However, even if Pakistan manage to beat Bangladesh on Friday, New Zealand are way ahead in terms of net run-rate, which is +0.175, compared to Pakistan's -0.792.

The only chance Pakistan has is if they defeat Bangladesh by a huge margin to not only equal New Zealand on points, but also beat them on the metric of net run rate. However, to secure that, Pakistan not only have to bat first against Bangladesh, but also need to win by at least 308 runs.

The mathematical improbability has triggered hilarious memes and with one saying: Here’s how Pakistan can get into the semis: If Pakistan bats first, scores 400+ runs and then locks Bangladesh team up in the dressing room.

Incidentally, Bangladesh are no pushovers. Currently placed seventh, they have been impressive in their wins against South Africa, Afghanistan and West Indies.
