Dvorak’s penultimate opera, Rusalka is a melodic, colourful, evocative, spacious, atmospheric and symphonically-conceived work in the post-Wagnerian tradition that does not lose its Czech folk flavour. It represents a cornerstone of the repertoire of Czech opera houses and was first performed in Prague in 1901. The most popular excerpt from Rusalka is the ‘Song to the Moon’ from Act 1, which is often performed in concert and recorded separately.
