Writing Is Fun to The Hanuman Colouring Book: 4 kiddie delights

Title: Writing Is Fun

Author: Jeanne Perrett

This writing activity book starts off with the author’s note, an adorable ditty by Jeanne Perrett. Essentially it tells us that whether using a pencil, stick or pen, whether you’re writing about things that are good, funny or bad, whether you are at the beach or travelling, standing up or sitting down, you can write! Yes, even if you’re getting it all wrong or half-right!

This book is divided into chapters which cover being a writer, an editor, creating characters, followed by the writing of everything from a pirate story and a ghost story to a play, a comic strip, historical fiction, fairy tale, advertisement and biography, and more. Filled with interesting vocabulary, grammar and punctuation tips, personified through characters The Saurus and Grammar Mouse, this guide is just what’s needed to set budding writers on the ‘write’ track.

Title: Pink and Blue

Author: Ritu Vaishnav

This slim, glossy book intrigues with its title itself – the words pink and blue are printed in the opposite colours. An attempt by a mum to start a conversation with her little one about gender stereotypes, it encourages children to question notions such as ‘Pink is for girls, blue is for boys’, ‘Girls play house, boys play cricket’, and ‘Cry like a girl, kick like a boy’. Questioning these notions is essential before children’s thinking is shaped, and this book offers adults a wonderful opportunity to initiate this very necessary discussion.

Title: Amma, Take Me to the Dargah of Salim Chishti

Author: Bhakti Mathur

Bhakti Mathur, creator of the popular Amma, Tell Me series of children’s picture books about Indian festivals and mythology, returns with her latest in the travel with Amma series. This time we join Amma’s boys as they visit the fascinating walled city of Fatehpur Sikri. Peppered with interesting details about why Mughal emperor Akbar visited the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, the writing and its illustrations make the experience come alive. Whether it’s walking through Buland Darwaza, taking in the majestic architecture of the compound, hearing the beautiful notes of azan wafting from the Jama Masjid, tying a thread on the delicate jali screens as you make a wish, or gazing at the pearl-like dargah of Salim Chishti, full marks to Mathur for a most engaging read. More hearteningly, it serves to introduce young readers to the history of different faiths and their associated monuments.

Title: The Hanuman Colouring Book

Author: Mala Dayal

Among the beloved divinities, Hanuman’s appeal cuts across all age groups. Children are huge fans of his strength, his bravery and derring-do. Now an interesting colouring book brings alive the monkey god’s story for children, with each page revealing the tale in short doses of text. Whether a child prefers to read it as a book in one go, or lets the story unfurl as s/he colours each page, it makes for a great activity — it even comes with a box of crayons. While colouring, as an activity provides enjoyment to every child and helps build focus, there is no reason why adults could not also benefit from the same. Created by Mala Dayal, who has been involved with developing, editing and writing books for children for over forty years, you might also want to check out her works, The Story of Hanuman, The Story of Krishna, The Ramayana in Pictures and Nanak: The Guru.
