As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage, India has administered over 34 crore vaccine doses thus far. Within this, eight states including Madhya Pradesh have have administered more than 50 lakh first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in the age group 18-44. However, public enthusiasm for getting inoculated might have somewhat exceeded expectations in some areas.
A now viral video from Madhya Pradesh's Lodhikheda area show a stampede-like situation in a vaccine centre as people scramble over each other, push and shove in a rush to get inoculated. The incident took place on Thursday and has since left netizens horrified.
The video appears to have been taken from inside the inoculation centre, and shows people nearly crushing others in their bid to enter through the partially shuttered entrance. It is not clear why there was such an urgency, or whether they eventually received the injections.
In recent days, Madhya Pradesh has found itself embroiled in controversy over its vaccination efforts. While the state had inoculated a record-setting 17 lakh people on June 21, numbers have since declined. More recently, discrepancies have emerged, with several individuals receiving vaccination confirmation messages without getting injected. In one case, reports suggest that a 13 year old had received a message stating that he had been vaccinated.
