Florida congressman Matt Gaetz came out in support of Britney Spears in relation to her conservatorship after a hearing in which the singer tearfully spoke about the case's impact on her life.
"I just want my life back," Spears said on June 23.
Spears has been under court supervision, with her father and a team of attorneys controlling her life and finances, since February 2008. She was in the midst of a public meltdown at the time and her family sought the conservatorship for her protection.
At the June 23 hearing, Spears was harshly critical of her father, who serves as conservator of her finances, and had more measured criticism for Jodi Montgomery, the court-appointed professional who serves as conservator of her person, overseeing her life choices.
Spears supporters amassed outside the Los Angeles courthouse where the hearing was held on July 14, as they have during recent hearings. Republican Matt Gaetz made a brief appearance addressing the crowd.
"Well, now the whole world knows what Britney Spears wants, and it is the freedom and the liberty that should be offered to every single American. Free Britney!" he shouted.
However, the news hasn't gone well with Spears' supporters who are of the opinion that a man accused of sexual assault has no right to fight for a woman's cause.
In March 2021, the Department of Justice had announced an investigation against Gaetz regarding his alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year old girl. Reports stated that Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws.
Hence, Spears' supporters are not happy with Gaetz attaching his name to this case. They believe that he is doing this simply for political gains.
