Mumbai: The network of 5000 plus Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Mumbai has proved to be a boon as the crime detection rate has evidently gone up a notch. The police officials have said the cameras work as their virtual third eye, thereby helping them detect crimes ranging from crimes against women and theft to murders.

The CCTV cameras, used for security and traffic management, are spread across the city, giving an insight into the city’s day-to-day affairs. While the CCTVs are helping keep a sharp eye out on spots that are known for notorious activities, the captured images are increasingly helping officials in solving cases by proving to be strong evidences.

According to the police sources, this move has been well appreciated by all zonal police officers for the help these CCTVs provide by becoming an integral part of the investigation in various cases. Footage grabs are often used to identify accused, speeding the process of what would otherwise be a slow probe.

In the current CCTV network that was set up in 2017, more than 3,000 cameras are installed near highways and main roads to keep an eye on traffic movement, while the rest have been put up in bylanes or near schools, colleges or public places to check any suspicious activity or crime.

An officer in the control room said, “The officers sitting here keep a close eye on the streets using the footage coming in from the CCTV cameras installed by the Mumbai Traffic Police and Mumbai police. The traffic department has some 3,100 cameras, while the Mumbai police around 1,800.”

The CCTV cameras have also been upgraded with automatic sensors installed in them which generate an alert when they capture any suspicious activity, along with the number of cars passing by. This helps the officials in maintaining surveillance in the different areas of the city.

Considering the success of the current network of CCTV cameras, the home department recently submitted a proposal to widen the scope of CCTV surveillance in Mumbai. The new cameras will have enhanced features and quality. The Internet Protocol (IP) address of the new cameras will help the police respond to the situation more effectively, by relaying real-time feed to the main control room.
