Williams destroys Maria to win gold

London Serena Williams of the US demolished Russias Maria Sharapova to grab her first Olympic gold in the womens singles tennis on Saturday.

Fourth seed Williams blew Sharapova off the court, winning the first nine games on her way to a 6-

0, 6- 1 win sealed with an ace.

Earlier, World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka beat Russias Maria Kirilenko in straight sets to take bronze for Belarus.

Williams can add a second gold if she and her sister Venus retain their title in the womens doubles, where they will face Russian pair Maria Kirilenko and Nadezhda Petrova in the semifinal.

The winners will face Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova on Sunday.

US flag blows away The flag of the US flew at the Olympic medal ceremony for Serena Williamsalt39 tennis victory, although not in the way organisers intended.

With Williams wearing her womens singles gold, the medallistsalt39 flags were hoisted as the Star- Spangled Banner played, but a gust of wind blew the US flag away, leaving only the Russian and Belarusian flags flying.

The incident brought smiles from the players, while organisers opted not to raise the Stars and Stripes again.

Williams won her first Olympic singles gold by demolishing Russias Maria Sharapova in the final 6- 0, 6- 1.

The bronze went to Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who beat Russian No. 3 Maria Kirilenko in straight sets.
