Ujjain :  Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) will launch a campaign to make the city polythene free from August 12. Legal action will be taken against shopkeepers and vendors using polythene bags of less than 40 microns.

Municipal Speaker Sonu Gehlot chaired a special meeting at his office to implement the anti-polythene campaign here on Thursday. Commissioner Municipal Corporation Vivek Kshotriya, SDM Shaswat Meena, Pratima Joshi of Pollution Control Board and other officials were present during the meeting. They prepared the strategy for putting a ban on the use of polythene of less than 40 micron in the city. Gehlot said that they have made lot of efforts to implement the decision of not using polythene with the help of social workers, intellectuals, litterateurs and polythene sellers. They also held flaxes and hoardings to spread the message of not using polythene bags.  UMC is going to initiate a campaign from August 12 and a team has been formed to make raids at different establishments across the city.

 The team will charge fine on the shopkeepers for using polythene. As per the provisions of Act, the person using polythene of less than 40 micron will be sentenced imprisonment of three months and/or fine of Rs 5000.
