THE University Grants Commission ( UGC) has offered grants to the colleges offering science course for setting up a facility for safeguarding and maintaining their expensive instruments.

The colleg

es would have to apply through their respective university for the grant.

In a letter to the varsities, UGC joint- secretary Rajesh Anand said: ‘The UGC is inviting proposals from varsities for establishment of instrumentation maintenance facility ( IMF) at colleges.

The colleges having science courses can apply for the grant by August 20.’The varsities have been asked to ensure that the colleges applying for the grant are covered under Section 12 ( f) and 12 ( b) of the UGC Act.

The IMF programme is aimed at encouraging universities, autonomous colleges, PG colleges to establish an IMF as an essential support infrastructure to provide effective and efficient maintenance to their scientific instruments and electronic hardware.

It also is aimed at connecting the units so established in the country with each other using information technology so that they can improve their performance through exchange of experience and ideas.
